In the final stretch of preparing for my first recital at the 2015 International Society of Bassists convention, I realized my program was 5 or 6 minutes short. I considered many pieces to fill the gap but ultimately decided to commission a piece in memory of my father who had recently passed and was instrumental in getting me to my first convention as a student 20 years earlier.
In search of the right composer…
Hayk Arsenyan and I collaborated on a few projects and became friends while doing graduate work University of Iowa. In 2014 he toured quite a bit and we reconnected. I hadn’t realized during our time in Iowa that he had composed quite a bit. Synchronicity? I commissioned him to write a “5 or 6 minute work” that grew and morphed into a nearly 16 minutes work called “Stratum”.
